Local Physician and Inventor Helps Create Access to Healthcare Nationally

Renowned physician, Kevin Lavery, can now add “inventor” to his repertoire. As an ophthalmologist for TLC Eyecare & Laser Centers, Lavery has a passion for technology and the benefits it offers his patients. Joining forces with business partner Bart Foster, they created SoloHealth, a consumer-driven healthcare technology company. This venture, which began several years ago, led to the creation of The SoloHealth Station kiosk, an interactive, comprehensive health and wellness screening kiosk for consumers.

The kiosk was a vision of Lavery’s that began over 10 years ago. Seeing so many patients with diabetes and various health concerns that affected their vision, he felt that an early screening device would offer people a better chance of saving their vision. Lavery obtained a patent, and the project and idea evolved.

The SoloHealth Station provides health screenings for vision, blood pressure, weight, and body mass index, a symptom checker as well as an overall health assessment free of charge. SoloHealth also helps connect consumers to local professionals through their databases. “As a physician, I realize there are many barriers for patients trying to access healthcare. These barriers can be in the form of money, time, transportation, daycare, and even insurance. The SoloHealth kiosk will help eliminate many of those barriers. While it does not replace the importance and value of a patient personally visiting their physician, it gives people more access to diagnostic testing, and empowers patients in their own health care,” says Lavery. The data collection aspect also assists physicians, obtaining comprehensive information that can be used to monitor patients more effectively. “The kiosk offers less invasive ways to test and collect data, which helps both the patient and the attending physician,” adds Lavery.
